Common boiler problems
Boiler faults can show up in many ways. Some are simple; others need a qualified engineer. If you smell gas, follow official emergency guidance rather than trying to investigate it yourself.
No heating or hot water
Pressure repeatedly dropping
Unusual noises or error codes
Radiators not heating properly
Planned repairs for niggling faults
This page is about the faults that are irritating rather than urgent: a boiler that locks out once a week, hot water that runs lukewarm, a pressure gauge that needs topping up every month, or a fan that has started to whine. These are worth booking in before they turn into a full breakdown. If you have lost heating or hot water completely, see emergency boiler repair instead.
A slow-burning fault gives us the chance to gather information. A note of when it happens, how often and any code on the display makes the diagnosis far quicker. Photos of the display and the pipework underneath the boiler are useful too.
How we find the fault
We start with the simple things — gas supply, electrics, pressure, controls — then work through the boiler's own diagnostics and test the components linked to the symptom. Guessing and swapping parts until something works is expensive for you, so we would rather spend the time pinning down the cause.
Pressure loss is one of the most common reasons people call. Our guide to a boiler losing pressure explains the usual causes, from a weeping radiator valve to a failing expansion vessel, and what you can safely check yourself.
Repair before replacement
Where a sensible repair is available, we will explain it. If age, parts availability or repeated faults make replacement the better long-term option, we will set out that choice clearly without pressure, and our boiler installation page explains what a replacement involves.
Faults outside the boiler
Sometimes the boiler is fine and the problem sits elsewhere in the system: a sticking diverter valve, a pump that has seized, a zone valve that no longer opens or a thermostat with flat batteries. We check the whole heating circuit, and wider issues can be picked up under our central heating work.
Local help when your boiler fails
Based in Briton Ferry, we cover Neath, Port Talbot, Swansea and nearby communities. Call with the boiler make, any visible fault code and a description of the problem. Homeowners in Port Talbot can read about local issues such as frozen condensate pipes on our Port Talbot plumber page.
Common questions
Boiler Repair FAQs
Clear answers before you arrange a visit.
What information should I provide?+
The boiler make and model, any error code, when the fault started and whether you have heating or hot water are all helpful.
Should I reset the boiler?+
Only follow the reset instructions in the manufacturer’s user guide. If a fault returns, arrange a professional inspection.
Can you advise whether repair or replacement is better?+
Yes. We consider the boiler’s age, condition, repair cost and likely reliability before giving straightforward advice.
Do you repair older boilers?+
Where parts are still available and the boiler is safe, yes. For some older models parts become hard to source, and we will tell you if that is the case.
Will you fix it on the first visit?+
Where we can identify the fault and have the part, often yes. Some parts need ordering for a specific model, and we will explain the next step before we leave.
