How Long Does a Boiler Installation Take?
It is one of the first things people ask when they book a new boiler, and fair enough: you want to know how long the house will be without heating. The honest answer depends on the job.

Why there is no single answer
Two houses on the same street can need very different installations. One might need nothing more than the old boiler unhooked and a new one of the same type hung in its place. The next might need the boiler moved, a hot water cylinder taken out and new pipework run through two floors.
So rather than quote a standard figure, Chris looks at your house and then tells you how long your installation will take. Boiler installation is our main work, and planning the time properly is part of doing it well. Our boiler installation page covers the wider process.
Like-for-like swap or a conversion
A like-for-like swap is the quickest kind of job. The new boiler goes where the old one was, connecting to the same gas, water and heating pipes, and often using a similar flue position. Most of the time goes on draining the system, removing the old boiler, fitting and connecting the new one, then testing.
Converting from a system or regular boiler to a combi typically takes longer. The hot water cylinder comes out, along with any tanks in the loft, and pipework is rerouted so hot water comes straight from the boiler. Our combi boiler installation page explains what changes. Going the other way, fitting a system boiler with a new cylinder, also adds work for the cylinder and its controls.
Things that add time
A few parts of the job can stretch the timetable. Chris spots these during the survey so they are planned in rather than discovered on the day.
Flue changes: a new boiler may need the flue in a different position or a longer run to meet current rules.
Gas pipe upgrades: modern boilers can need a larger gas supply pipe than the old one had.
Condensate route: the pipe carrying waste water to a drain has to be run somewhere suitable.
Cleaning the system: older systems can hold sludge that should be cleared before a new boiler goes on.
New controls: fitting and setting up a new thermostat or programmer takes a little extra time.
The survey comes first
Every installation starts with a free survey. Chris checks where the flue can go, the size and condition of the gas and heating pipes, the condensate route and how much hot water your household uses. That is how he works out both the right boiler and how long fitting it will take.
You will know the plan and the expected timings before you agree to anything. If you live in the city, our boiler installation in Swansea page covers how we arrange those jobs. For what affects the price as well as the timing, see our guide to new boiler cost.
Preparing your home
Clearing space around the boiler, the airing cupboard and any loft hatch we need makes a real difference to how smoothly the day goes. Move anything fragile from the route we will use to carry the old boiler out, and let us know about parking.
Expect to be without heating and hot water while the work is under way. Boiling a kettle, filling a flask and having a couple of heaters ready for colder months helps. If anyone in the house is especially vulnerable to the cold, mention it when you book so we can plan around it.
After the install
Once the boiler is fitted, Chris commissions it: he checks the gas pressure, flue and safety devices, makes sure every radiator warms and confirms hot water is running properly. Then he takes you through the controls and shows you what the pressure gauge should read.
Your new boiler should then be serviced each year. Chris, Gas Safe registered with 25 years in the trade, can put you on our list for annual boiler servicing. To get started, call or WhatsApp 07429 632804 or use our contact page to request your free quote.
Common questions
Installation time FAQs
Clear answers before you arrange a visit.
Will I be without heating and hot water overnight?+
That depends on the size of the job. Chris will tell you during the quote how long the work will take, so you can plan around it.
Does converting to a combi take longer than a straight swap?+
Typically, yes. Removing the cylinder and tanks and rerouting pipework adds work compared with fitting the same type of boiler in the same place.
Do I need to be home during the installation?+
Someone needs to let us in at the start and be around at the end, so Chris can show you the controls and hand the boiler over.
Does the system need cleaning before a new boiler goes in?+
Usually it is a good idea, as sludge from the old system can harm a new boiler. Chris checks the condition of your system at the survey.
When should I book the first service?+
Around a year after the installation. We can add you to our list so the first service is not forgotten.
