LPG boiler service and repair

An LPG boiler needs the same regular attention as a mains gas one — plus an engineer qualified to work on LPG specifically. Here is what a service covers and the faults we see most often off the gas grid.

Who can work on an LPG boiler

Not every Gas Safe registered engineer can work on LPG. The registration card lists the categories an engineer holds, and LPG work needs the appropriate LPG categories on top of the usual domestic gas ones. You can check any engineer's card or look them up on the Gas Safe Register.

Ask us about availability for LPG work in your area when you get in touch, and we will tell you plainly what we can take on. If your LPG boiler is due for replacement rather than a repair, our LPG boiler installation page covers that side.

What an LPG boiler service covers

Much the same ground as a mains gas service, with the LPG supply checked too:

  • Visual inspection of the boiler, flue and its terminal
  • Combustion and burner checks, with cleaning where required
  • Safety devices and controls tested
  • Gas tightness of the supply from the tank or bottles to the boiler
  • The regulator and supply pipework looked over, though the tank itself is usually your supplier's responsibility

Common LPG boiler faults

The faults themselves are familiar — ignition problems, pressure loss, pumps, diverter valves — and our boiler problems guides apply just as they do to mains gas. The LPG-specific issue is supply: an empty tank, a frozen regulator in a hard frost, or a supplier-side problem will stop an otherwise healthy boiler.

Before booking a repair, check the tank gauge. Running the tank dry can also draw air into the supply, which needs purging before the boiler will run reliably again.

Servicing and breakdown cover from your supplier

Some LPG suppliers offer their own service plans or have arrangements with local engineers. It is worth knowing what your supplier covers before you book independently, so you do not pay twice for the same visit.

Booking a service or repair

Ring 07429 632804 and describe what the boiler is doing — or not doing. For a repair, any fault code on the display and the boiler's make and model help Chris prepare. For anything urgent, our emergency boiler repair page explains the first checks, and if you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.

Common questions

LPG Boiler Service and Repair FAQs

Clear answers before you arrange a visit.

Can any Gas Safe engineer repair an LPG boiler?+

No. The engineer needs the appropriate LPG categories on their Gas Safe card. Check the card or the register before booking anyone, including us.

How often should an LPG boiler be serviced?+

Annually, the same as a mains gas boiler, following the manufacturer's instructions. Regular servicing also keeps most manufacturer warranties valid.

My LPG boiler has stopped — what should I check first?+

Check the tank gauge first: an empty tank is the most common cause. Then check the boiler pressure and any fault code. If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999 before anything else.

Do you service LPG boilers in my area?+

We cover the area around our Briton Ferry base. Ring 07429 632804 and we will tell you honestly whether we can take on your LPG work.
