Smell gas? Do this before anything else
If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. Open doors and windows, don't use light switches or anything that could spark, turn off the gas at the meter if you can do so safely, and leave the property. Once the gas emergency service has made things safe, we can help with the repair.
The first ten minutes of a plumbing emergency
When water is pouring out of a pipe or through a ceiling, what you do in the first few minutes makes the biggest difference to the damage. None of these steps need tools, and they are worth knowing before anything ever goes wrong.
Find the stopcock and turn it clockwise to shut off the mains. It is usually under the kitchen sink, but can be in a downstairs toilet, under the stairs or where the supply enters the house.
If water is near sockets, light fittings or the consumer unit, switch the electricity off at the main switch — but only if you can reach it without standing in water.
Open the cold taps, and flush the toilets, to drain down the water still in the pipes. If the leak is on the hot side, turn off the boiler or immersion heater and open the hot taps too.
Catch what you can with buckets and towels. If a ceiling is bulging with water, keep clear of it.
Take photos and short videos of the leak and any damage. Your home insurer may ask for them later.
Which problems count as an emergency?
Not every plumbing problem needs someone that day, but some really can't wait. We treat these as urgent:
A burst or badly leaking pipe you can't control
Water coming through a ceiling or light fitting
No water at all in the house (after checking with your water supplier that there's no local outage)
An overflowing toilet cistern or cold-water tank that won't stop running
A leaking hot-water cylinder
When it can wait for a booked visit
A dripping tap, a slow-draining sink, a toilet that runs on now and then or a small weep from a radiator valve are annoying but rarely damaging if you keep an eye on them. Put a bowl under the drip and book a normal visit. If your problem is no heating or no hot water rather than a leak, our emergency boiler repair page has checks you can make first, and slower boiler faults are covered under boiler repairs.
What to tell Chris when you ring
A quick, clear call helps Chris judge how serious things are and what he'll need to bring. Have this ready if you can:
Your address and postcode
What you can see — where the water is coming from, and how fast
Whether you've managed to turn the water off at the stopcock
Whether there is any water near electrics
A photo or video, which you can send on WhatsApp
An honest answer, not a promise we can't keep
C Gill & Son is a small family-run business — Chris and his son, who is a second-year apprentice. That means you speak to the person who will actually do the work, not a call centre. It also means we won't promise a time we can't meet.
When you ring 07429 632804, Chris will tell you honestly whether he can come out and roughly when. If he can't get there in time to help, he'll say so, so you can call someone else without waiting around. Our normal hours are Monday to Friday 8am–8pm and Saturday 8am–6pm.
After the emergency
Once the immediate problem is under control, we'll explain what caused it and what a permanent repair involves. A burst pipe in a loft might point to pipework that needs lagging; a leak behind a radiator might be part of a wider central heating issue. We'd rather fix the cause than patch the symptom.
If you need to claim on your home insurance, we can describe what we found and what we did, and your photos from the first ten minutes will help.
Where we cover
We're based at Briton Ferry and take emergency calls from Neath, Port Talbot, Swansea and the surrounding area, within our roughly 30-mile radius of SA11 2JG. Not sure if you're covered? Check our areas we cover page or just ring and ask. For non-urgent jobs, the contact page is the easiest way to send details and photos.
Common questions
Emergency Plumber FAQs
Clear answers before you arrange a visit.
Are you available 24 hours a day?+
We don't promise round-the-clock cover. Ring 07429 632804 and Chris will tell you honestly whether and when he can attend.
Where is my stopcock likely to be?+
Most often under the kitchen sink. If not, try a downstairs toilet, under the stairs, a garage or near the front door where the supply pipe comes in.
My stopcock won't turn. What should I do?+
Don't force it with a tool, as old stopcocks can snap. Drain the system by opening the cold taps, and tell Chris when you call.
Should I call my water company or a plumber?+
If the leak is outside your boundary or in the street, call your water supplier. Pipes inside your home are usually your responsibility, so call a plumber.
I smell gas. Can you come out?+
Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first and follow their advice. Once it's safe, we can help with any repair.
