Back boilers were fitted in thousands of Welsh homes from the 1960s onwards. Many still work, but parts are scarce and they are far less efficient than a modern boiler. Here is what replacing one actually involves.

What is a back boiler?
A back boiler sits in the chimney opening, behind a gas fire in the living room. The fire and the boiler often share one gas supply and one flue up the chimney. The boiler heats water that circulates to the radiators and to a copper cylinder in the airing cupboard, usually topped up from a cold-water tank in the loft.
If you have a gas fire with a set of controls hidden behind a panel at the bottom, and a hot-water cylinder upstairs, there is a fair chance a back boiler is doing the work.
Why people replace them
Replacement parts for older models are getting harder to find
They waste a lot of heat compared with a modern condensing boiler
The fireplace stays occupied by an appliance many people would rather remove
A fault with the fire or boiler can leave the whole house without heating
Can a back boiler be repaired or serviced?
Often, yes, as long as the parts are still available and the appliance passes its safety checks. A Gas Safe registered engineer can service it, check the flue and test the controls. The difficulty is that each repair on a very old unit is a gamble on finding the part, so many homeowners decide to plan a replacement before the next breakdown rather than after it.
What a replacement involves
The back boiler and fire are disconnected and the gas supply capped safely. The unit is taken out of the chimney opening, which can then be made good or left ready for a new fire. A new boiler is fitted elsewhere, often in the kitchen or a utility area, with its own flue through an outside wall.
Pipework has to be run from the old location to the new boiler, and a condensate pipe added. You can keep a cylinder by fitting a system or regular boiler, or remove the tank and cylinder altogether with a combi. Our boiler installation page explains those three options.
What drives the cost
Back boiler work is usually a bigger job than a straight swap. The price depends on where the new boiler goes, how much pipework has to be rerouted, whether you keep the cylinder and the state of the existing radiators. Our new boiler cost guide explains these factors without guesswork figures.

Common questions
Back Boiler Replacement FAQs
Clear answers before you arrange a visit.
Can a back boiler be disconnected and left in place?+
It can be safely disconnected and capped by a Gas Safe engineer, but most people have it removed during the replacement so the fireplace can be used again.
Can a back boiler be replaced with another back boiler?+
Very few are made now, so most homes move to a modern boiler fitted elsewhere in the house. Chris will talk through where it could go.
Is it still worth repairing my back boiler?+
If the part is available and the boiler is otherwise safe, a repair can buy time. If faults are becoming regular, planning a replacement is usually the calmer option.
Can back boilers still be serviced?+
Yes. A service checks the burner, flue and safety devices on both the boiler and the fire, which matters because they often share a chimney.
