Towel rail installation

A heated towel rail warms the bathroom and dries the towels — when it works. Whether you want one fitted, an old one replaced or a leaking one sorted, here is what is involved.

Types of towel rail

Most bathroom towel rails connect to the central heating and warm up with the radiators. Dual-fuel versions add an electric element, so the rail can run in summer when the heating is off. Purely electric rails need no plumbing at all, just a suitable electrical supply, which must be fitted by someone qualified to work in bathrooms.

The right choice depends on how you use the bathroom. If you want warm towels in July without firing the boiler, dual fuel is worth considering. If the rail only needs to work when the heating is on, a standard rail plumbed into the heating circuit is the simplest option.

Fitting or replacing a towel rail

Swapping a like-for-like rail means draining part of the heating system, removing the old rail and hanging the new one on the existing pipework. If the new rail has different pipe centres, the pipework is adjusted to suit. New valves are fitted at the same time — old valves on a new rail are a false economy.

A rail where there was no rail before means running flow and return pipes from the heating circuit, which is easiest when the floor is already up or the bathroom is being refitted. If you are planning a bigger job, our bathroom installations service can build the rail into the plan, and radiator installation covers the rest of the house.

Towel rail problems

  • Cold at the top — air trapped inside, usually cured by bleeding it like a radiator
  • Cold all over when the heating is on — a stuck valve, a blockage, or the system needs balancing
  • Leaking from a valve or joint — isolate it with the valves at each end and call us
  • Rust or pinhole leaks in the rail itself — replacement is the only lasting fix

What affects the cost

The rail itself ranges from basic ladder rails to designer styles, and the work depends on whether the pipework is already in the right place. A straight swap is a small job; a new position or a conversion to dual fuel takes longer. We will explain what is involved for your bathroom before quoting.

Common questions

Towel Rail Installation FAQs

Clear answers before you arrange a visit.

Can any towel rail be electric?+

A standard plumbed rail can often be converted to dual fuel with an electric element. A rail designed only for central heating should not be run electric-only unless the manufacturer allows it. Electrical work in bathrooms has strict rules and must be done by a qualified person.

Can heated towel rails catch fire?+

A correctly installed rail is very safe. Problems come from poor electrical work or covering an electric rail with towels for long periods. Keep to the manufacturer's guidance and have electrical work done properly.

Can I convert my towel rail to electric?+

Often, yes, with a dual-fuel element and a suitable electrical supply. The plumbing side is straightforward; the electrical connection must be done by someone qualified for bathroom work.

Why is my towel rail cold at the top?+

Trapped air. Bleed it with a radiator key, the same as a radiator, and check the boiler pressure afterwards if you have a sealed system.
