Smart Thermostat Installation

A smart thermostat lets you control the heating from your phone, set schedules room by room on some systems and turn the heating down when you are out. Whether one suits your home depends mostly on the boiler and the wiring you already have.

What a smart thermostat does

A standard room thermostat switches the heating on when the room drops below the temperature you set. A smart thermostat does the same but connects to your home Wi-Fi, so you can change the setting, adjust the timer and see the temperature from an app.

Depending on the model, extra features can include learning your routine, using your phone's location to tell when the house is empty, controlling hot water on cylinder systems and working with smart radiator valves to heat rooms separately.

Will it work with my boiler?

Most gas boilers can be controlled by a smart thermostat, but how it connects varies:

  • Combi boilers usually just need the heating switched on and off, which most smart thermostats handle easily
  • System and regular boilers with a hot water cylinder need a model that can control hot water as well as heating
  • Some boilers support a modulating connection, which lets the boiler run at lower output rather than switching fully on and off
  • Older systems with a separate programmer and wiring centre may need some rewiring at the boiler or wiring centre

The C wire question

Many smart thermostats sold for American homes talk about needing a 'C wire'. UK installations work differently. Most UK smart thermostats use a receiver or heat link wired near the boiler, with the thermostat itself running on batteries or a separate power supply. So in most UK homes the C wire is not the issue; what matters is how the receiver connects to your boiler or wiring centre.

Nest, Hive and others

Nest and Hive are two of the best-known names, and there are several others. They differ in how the app works, whether they learn your routine, how they handle hot water and how they work with smart room valves. The best choice is the one that matches your boiler, your heating layout and how you like to control things. Chris can talk through compatibility; he does not represent any particular brand.

What affects installation cost

We do not publish prices. The cost depends on the thermostat you choose, whether you buy it or we supply it, how the existing controls are wired, whether hot water control is needed and whether smart radiator valves are being fitted too. A combi with a simple wired thermostat is usually the most straightforward.

Can smart thermostats save money?

They can help, mainly by making it easier to heat the house only when you need it. The saving depends on how you used your heating before. If you already set a careful schedule and turn the heating down when you go out, the difference will be smaller than for a household whose heating runs on a fixed timer whether anyone is in or not.

Already have one that is playing up?

If your existing thermostat has stopped controlling the heating, our guide to a thermostat not working goes through the checks to try first. Our central heating page covers controls more generally.

Common questions

Smart Thermostat Installation FAQs

Clear answers before you arrange a visit.

Can I install a smart thermostat myself?+

Some kits are sold for self-installation, but they involve mains-voltage wiring at the boiler or wiring centre. If you are not confident with that, have it fitted professionally.

Can I install a smart thermostat without a C wire?+

In most UK homes, yes. UK smart thermostats normally use a receiver wired near the boiler, so the C wire issue common in American guides rarely applies.

Can I use a smart thermostat with any heating system?+

Most gas boiler systems can use one, but systems with a hot water cylinder need a model that controls hot water too. Compatibility should be checked before you buy.

Can a smart thermostat save money?+

It can make it easier to avoid heating an empty house. How much you save depends on how you used your heating before.

Nest or Hive: which is better?+

Both are well-established. The right choice depends on your boiler, whether you need hot water control and which app suits you. Chris can check compatibility with your system.
