Power Flush and Radiator Flushing

A power flush is a deep clean for your central heating. A pump is connected to the system and water with cleaning chemicals is pushed through the pipes, radiators and boiler at a higher flow than the heating normally runs, lifting out the sludge and scale that have built up over the years.

What is power flushing?

Heating water slowly corrodes the inside of steel radiators, creating black iron oxide sludge. Hard water areas also leave scale, particularly in the boiler's heat exchanger. Over time this debris settles where the water moves slowly, which is usually the bottom of radiators and the narrow passages in the boiler.

Power flushing uses a dedicated flushing machine connected into the circuit, often in place of the pump or at a radiator. Chemicals are added to loosen deposits, and the flow is directed through one radiator at a time while the dirty water is dumped and replaced with clean. The process continues until the water runs clear.

Signs a system may need cleaning

These symptoms often point to sludge or scale rather than a single failed part:

  • Radiators warm at the top but cold along the bottom
  • Black or dark brown water when you bleed a radiator
  • A boiler that bangs, rumbles or kettles when firing
  • Heating that takes much longer to warm the house than it used to
  • Pumps or valves that keep sticking or failing

Power flush, chemical flush or mains flush

Not every dirty system needs a full power flush. A chemical cleanse, where cleaner is added and circulated by the system's own pump for a period before draining, can be enough for light contamination. A mains flush uses water pressure to rinse through. A power flush is the more thorough option for systems with heavier deposits.

The right choice depends on the age of the system, how bad the sludge is and what the boiler manufacturer requires for a new installation. Some older systems with weak pipework or tired radiators are not suited to the higher flow of a power flush, and that needs to be judged on the system itself.

Before a new boiler

Fitting a new boiler to a dirty system shortens its life. Current guidance expects the system to be cleaned and protected when a new boiler goes in, and many manufacturers ask for this as a warranty condition. Our boiler installation page explains how a new boiler is planned.

Keeping it clean afterwards

After flushing, the system is refilled and dosed with inhibitor to slow future corrosion. A magnetic filter catches any sludge that forms later, and cleaning it at each annual service keeps the system in good order.

What affects the cost of a flush

We do not publish a set price. The main factors are the number of radiators, how heavily contaminated the system is, whether it is a sealed or open-vented system and whether a filter is fitted at the same time. Our guide to power flush cost explains these in more detail.

Is it sludge, or something else?

A cold radiator is not always sludge. Air, a stuck valve or poor balancing can look similar. Our guide to a radiator cold at the bottom helps you tell them apart before booking.

Common questions

Power Flushing FAQs

Clear answers before you arrange a visit.

What is a power flush?+

A deep clean of the central heating, using a flushing machine and cleaning chemicals to push sludge and scale out of the pipes, radiators and boiler.

What is the difference between power flushing and a radiator flush?+

A radiator flush can mean taking one radiator off and rinsing it out. Power flushing cleans the whole system at once while it stays connected.

How much does a power flush cost?+

It depends on the number of radiators, how dirty the system is and the type of system. Chris gives a clear figure after looking. Our power flush cost guide explains the factors.

How much does a single radiator flush cost?+

Removing and flushing one radiator is a smaller job than a full system flush, but the cost still depends on access and the system type. Ask when you call.

Can a power flush damage old pipes?+

On weak or corroded systems, a high-flow flush can expose existing leaks. That is why the system's condition is checked first and a gentler method is sometimes recommended.
