Why the pipework comes first
Most bathroom refits look like a job about tiles, taps and suites. Underneath, though, it is a plumbing job. Waste pipes need the right fall, supply pipes need to be sized for the shower you want, and anything hidden behind a wall has to be right before it is boxed in, because nobody wants to lift new tiles to chase a leak.
C Gill & Son is a family-run plumbing and heating firm. Chris is Gas Safe registered, has 25 years in the trade and has run the business for 12 years, with his son working alongside him as a second-year apprentice. That background means we look at your bathroom from the pipes outwards. Our main bathroom installations page sets out the general approach.
Planning the layout and moving fittings
If the current layout works, keeping the toilet, basin and bath where they are is usually the simplest route. Plenty of people want a change, though: a walk-in shower where the bath was, a basin moved to free up floor space, or a toilet shifted to a different wall.
Moving fittings is often possible, but the toilet is the one that needs the most thought, because its waste has to reach the soil pipe with enough fall. Chris checks the floor construction, the waste routes and where pipes can run before suggesting a layout, so the plan you agree on is one that can actually be built.
Showers and hot water: will the boiler cope?
This is the question a lot of bathroom fitters skip. A bigger shower head or a second shower can ask more of your hot water than the boiler can give, and the result is a disappointing trickle in an otherwise lovely room.
We look at what heats your water now and how many people use it at busy times. A combi suits many homes with one bathroom, while a household with two bathrooms in use at once may be better served by a cylinder. If the boiler needs changing anyway, see our pages on combi boiler installation and system boiler installation so you can plan both jobs together.
Towel rails, radiators and warm floors
Heating is easy to forget when picking a suite. A heated towel rail can replace the old radiator, though it is worth checking it gives off enough heat for the room rather than just warming towels. Chris can connect it to the existing central heating or discuss other options.
Bathrooms are also one of the best rooms for warm floors, since the floor is coming up anyway. Our underfloor heating page explains the choices, and it is far simpler to decide before the floor is laid than afterwards.
Booking a Swansea bathroom in advance
We are based at 65 Church Street in Briton Ferry, SA11, and Swansea is a short hop along the bay. Bathrooms are planned work, so we book them in ahead rather than slotting them between other calls. That gives time to agree the layout, order everything and arrive with a clear plan for each stage.
Lead times change through the year, so the earlier you get in touch the more choice of dates you will have. We work Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 8am to 6pm.
